My mini Urban Farm is coming to the end of it's season.... so sad!
Here's today's harvest
I started with the Herbs, (clockwise L to R)
Basil,  Citrus Mint, Pineapple Sage and Thai Basil
I harvested almost a pound of each and am going to dry them out for use this winter.
(L to R)
Lavender, Thyme and Rosemary again about a 1lb each
 and for Greens and veggies,
(clockwise L to R)
about 2lbs of Spinach, 2-3lbs of Mixed Green Lettuce, 2 large Broccoli Heads, 2 Green Bell Peppers,
6  Banana Peppers, 1 Small Cucumber, Chives and 3 small Zucchini.
Enough to feed the family this week!
I'm already daydreaming what I'm going to plant this Spring! I can't wait!

All for now!

Natures Flowering Sculpture

To grow and see such a magical plant take shape and unfurl so organically and gracefully is an honor,
I've been watching my Brassia-Oncidium Orchid slowly reach its stem in a zig zag pattern to the sky, shapes it's flower buds and slowly unfurl it's blooms one by one...
it's been a process of about four weeks, I want to share with you photos I took today

it unfurls starting at the bottom of the stem to the top...
one bloom is fully open as two more are in separate stages of opening...
I'm having some deep sculptural inspiration on this one! My Mr. and I were discussing sculptures a few weeks ago.... we have some plans....  *wink * wink*

Happy Autumn!

Trying to embrace that today is the first day of Autumn, it POURED today, then suddenly about 3pm the wind came, took the clouds and rain away with it and all was calm and sunny...

I spent most of the day in the studio working on 20 paintings for the upcoming Burien 20/20 Show
(in November)
Rain and Tears must subconsciously be on my mind
(Rainy Autumn and Tears from missing Summer already)
I like where this body of work is going so I'm sticking with it for now, the paintings are on wood board and I'm painting, with LOTS of layering to give it an Encaustic look.
Here's a Canvas piece I'm experimenting wit, loving the "waxy" look to it.
I did get to enjoy the nice afternoon a bit once my Mr. got home, we went for a short drive with a great view...
this view makes me fall in love with Seattle again...
from the dock you can look into the crystal clear Puget Sound..
Do you see the Starfish?

All for now!

End of Summer Shenanigans...

I apologize for about the lack of posting... I've been busy around the homestead preparing the gardens and critters for winter plus getting ready for some art show deadlines.

Lets see... First we got the massive planter box built, actually I didn't, my Mr. did.
it's a little over 10ft long, 2ft tall and 2ft wide.
I need to get the Japonica Bamboo (sitting behind it) planted in it so it will fill in and make a nice screen by next fall. I just traded for some 20ft tall Black Bamboo (pictured far left in back ground) That will be planted next I'm slowly landscaping this side, which is the side of my studio, we will be putting in an entrance door and a wood fence on the side, hopefully in spring. He's also going to make two more smaller planter boxes for me.
Mention of my Studio
I've been working on it this week getting it cleaned up so we can finish the framing and dry wall.
I will also be having a HUGE STUDIO SALE  (at my studio)
it gives you the opportunity to see where I create and pick up some very inexpensive art!
(you won't want to miss this one, trust me)
Stay tuned for the date, it should be happening within the next couple weeks I will announce it soon, promise!

My current painting I'm working on is the giant Salvador Dali on canvas....
it's about 4ft x 5ft

trying to make it so you can hang it any direction...still working on it, it will be available on my website soon.
Next up....
My parents bought me a Jack Lalanne Juicer, which I LOVE!

I tried ordering one from the official website, but they got my order wrong over the phone, told me the original one I wanted wasn't available after they sold it to me, then argued with me and tried selling me a whole different brand of juicer when I cancelled my order. I would NOT recommend ordering from them, although I love and stand by the product. So my parents got mine at Costco

This morning I found my perfect juice mix...
and gosh damn it's good!
1- Apple
1- Pear
1- Small Tomato
1- Green Onion
1- 1" piece of fresh Ginger Root
1- Large Carrot
After juicing I let the Peacocks out
(Peanut the peahen, the brown one, was on a mission to get somewhere)
and did 30 minutes of Sun Salutations
It was GREAT, being outside in the crisp morning air, sun just rising, hearing the wild birds, being surrounded by trees and nature....
I think I might have to make this a daily routine!
All for now!

Buckwheat Muffins

Ingredient you will need:
1.5 Cups of Bobs Buckwheat Pancake mix
1 Cup Rolled Oats (I used the instant oats)
1 Egg (I used a Large Organic Brown egg)
1 Cup Milk (I used 1%, you can substitute Soy if needed)
1/3 Oil
1/2 tsp Vanilla
1/2 cup Pure Honey
1 tsp Baking Soda

I mixed everything above together in a mixing bowl until it was wet,
I oiled up the muffin pans (you can also use paper baking cups or non-stick spray)
Scoop into pans
I experimented with different topping on them,

For the tops I added the following combos (not mixed all together)
Chopped Apple + Dash of Cinnamon
Chopped Tomato + Chopped Red Onion
Granola + Cinnamon
Plain Oats
Oats + Cinnamon

Bake for 15-20 minutes at 400 degrees. You might want to check them at 15 minutes depending on your oven.

What does your food have in it?

I've been reading a lot about the use of GMO's in our food, Washington State will get a chance to vote on  GMO's listed on food labels this November,
Personally I want to know if my food has been genetically modified or not...

 I do support
Yes on 522

Here's is a link to the other side
No on 522

You think when you eat beef or drink milk you think your eating cow.. or drinking cows milk.. so what if that cow has human genes in it? Gross huh?
Well, it's been happening for awhile now...
I know we can't stop every contaminate from getting in our food but we have the right to know what's being put in it purposely.

Thankfully we have the space for a garden and it's all organic, I add organic soil and mulch each year before planting. Especially in our area, we're located in the  Tacoma Smelter Plume
It's really to bad so much land was affected, many people moving to the area have no idea about it, it happened years ago but just this year they sent out a "Dirt Alert" after finding  Arsenic in the top soil of a park a couple miles away. Scary.
So please be cautious and do some research about where your food comes from.
Today in my garden I picked
3 Lemon Boys (which are very good)
3 Early Girls, 4 Romas, 1 Broccoli,
2 Cucumbers,  1 Banana Pepper and a dozen Sweet 100's
We have been buying more Organic food and trying to eliminate processed and refined whites out of our diet, I was surprised my Mr. brought home Bob's Buckwheat Pancake mix,
it is delicious! I made pancakes for my breakfast today topped with Clover Honey...
So far we have been eating quite healthy, lots of fresh greens and raw veggies,
we switched to Whole grain pasta.

We tried a few brands and didn't like it until we bought Barilla Brand Pasta, the texture isn't so "gritty"
It takes a bit to get used to because of the thicker texture but we like it now and haven't gone back.
I was reading last night that Barilla will be adding a Gluten Free Pasta this month in select stores.
Here's their press release
We'll give that a try when we get a chance.

Shades of Gray and Blue....

This last weekend (Labor Day) we decided it was a good time to update the front porch paint,
we thought that there's just to much going on with all the colors, a lot of white and some unfinished wood beams, so I matched up the house color which is called "Witching Hour" by Benjamin Moore
Much better! We think it looks a lot "cleaner" and not so busy anymore.
While I was in my house painting mood, I decided to update the door color,
it was a nice Turquoise/ Azure Blue
I wanted a more saturated Blue, like a True Deep Cobalt or Dark Ultramarine.
I wanted it to be a very specific color, in fact the color of a vintage German Keramik planter I have.
I brought the pot into Home Depot and their awesome paint dept. matched it perfect!
Here is a before and "during" painting the back door
Here is the planter and the door

The way the color shows up in the pictures doesn't really do it justice, it has more of a purple tint like this:
The front and back doors both glow now, it's so beautiful!
This weekend, weather permitting, I will be painting the garage doors...

One year Anniversary!

I feel like I haven't accomplished much in the last year...
I feel like time passes by to fast....
as I sat here thinking about 2013 and the things I have done, I realized last year during Labor Day weekend we moved into our new house and I was thinking about how much I still haven't done and how many projects haven't got finished.. since the day we moved in.... a whole year...
Especially outside... So I started looking through pictures of the house and yard and to my surprise
I saw visuals of all my love, sweat, blisters and soar muscles that I poured into our yard, making it a sanctuary for our family, I suddenly realized, I HAVE done a great amount in such a small time...

Wanna see some before and after pictures?
